2019 Nebbiolo – Pyreneese

WinePilot - 92 Points

The Pyrenees has always been a happy hunting ground for Nebbiolo with its continental climate and cool nights vital to helping this particular grape shine. This wine, however, is a slightly unusual take on Nebbiolo. Forget the bold tannic reds, this is a pretty and stylish example which still showcases nebbiolo’s charm.

It’s a light cherry red to start, similar to a deeply coloured rosé, a theme continued by its pretty watermelon, potpourri and spicy aromas. The wine is then crisp, light-bodied and perfumed with raspberry and floral flavours supported by silky tannins with a lingering finish. It is an early drinking style well suited to food and lightly chilled would be superb with a smorgasbord of charcuterie and cheese on a balmy Summer afternoon.

2019 Friulano – Mornington Peninsula

WinePilot - 92 Points

We are going off the beaten track here into the world of skin contact and low intervention wines. The first clue is this white wine is a little cloudy as it has been bottled with a touch of sediment to add texture and also some earthy tones. And it is also made from Friulano, a grape seldom seen out of its home in Northern Italy. Friulano is often quite an expressive grape variety which the skin contact has muted in this example, as you would expect.

For the style I like it. There are beautifully delicate fruits; peach skin, floral and earth with some subtle oak. This all leads to a tangy and larger angular palate with some attractive textural richness. It is super savoury, still overlaid with those pretty floral fruits and then finishes long with a saline tang. A good primer into the world of more natural wines.

A blend of grapes from McLaren Vale and Adelaide Hills, this is wonderfully fruited and fabulously expressed on the nose showing blackberry, cassis, violet and cedar characters with nuances of game and warm spice. The palate displays excellent concentration and rich texture, beautifully complemented by loads of polished tannins, making it immensely drinkable. At its best: now to 2030.
